We understand that caring for a family member or friend who lives with dementia can be tiring both physically and emotionally.
Taking a break, whether it’s for a holiday, to spend time with other family members or just catch-up with sleep can be important for mind, body and soul. Having some time away can also benefit your loved one, as they enjoy 24/7 professional care and an environment that is entirely focused on their wellbeing.
According to the Carers Trust, respite is a short break, anything from a couple of hours to several weeks, away from caring to help recharge your batteries. It may help you to stay well and feel better able to cope with the challenges of looking after a family member who lives with dementia.
Gez Ossai, General Manager at Wentworth Court, Cheltenham’s only dementia-specialist nursing home, sees the benefit for family members whose loved ones who come for respite care.
Gez says ”Respite care allows the unpaid carer, usually a family member, the opportunity to unwind and put themselves first for a period of time. It can also demystify what life is like in a modern nursing home; many people have a negative idea of what this might be like, from outdated perceptions or from the media, so we find that people are often pleasantly surprised!

“Short periods of care can give a great insight into what 24-hour professional care looks like and how their loved one adapts and benefits. Needless to say, the care that the residents receive at Wentworth Court is of the highest quality.

Gez adds, “Everyone staying with us is encouraged to continue life in the community. This might include trips out to coffee shops, the library, parks, a local theatre or sporting events. We also welcome entertainers and young people and visiting pets into the home on a weekly basis.
“We would always encourage anyone who is considering respite care to come and visit us, take a tour, and meet the team who can answer any questions. We can also put them in touch with families who have experience of their loved ones living at Wentworth Court and are willing to provide an insight from their perspective.”

Yes we can if that’s what the family would like but generally weekends are included however if it is not required, that is an option.
The shortest respite period is two weeks and the longest can be arranged either at the time of admission or can roll over indefinitely after two weeks. Some residents stay for several months, other a few weeks at a time. It’s all about what the individual needs of the family are and meeting those needs.
Usually this is dependent on a care needs assessment but it’s generally it’s no more than £1525 per week. See the Further Support section below for information about help towards respite fees.
Gloucestershire Carers Hub is a service funded by Gloucestershire County Council to support unpaid carers living in the county. They can provide advice and support about caring for a loved one with dementia and advise about possible funding for periods of respite care.
