Residents at a Cheltenham care home took a paws out of their day to spend time with some cute kittens from Huntley-based New Start Cat Rescue.
The residents, who live with mid to late-stage dementia, took no time in befriending the gorgeous ginger and white Tom cats, Gordon, Robertson and Frankie plus their tortie sister, Gloria. The six-week-old siblings are currently seeking new homes, along with their mum Heather.
The visit was part of a day of pet-themed activities in celebration of International Cat Day.
Sue Donne, who has volunteered with New Start Cat Rescue for more than four years said: “I was a nurse and saw a lot of people who went to live in care homes who may have had animals at home, so a visit like this can bring so much joy. I know that if I had to go into a home I’d be lost without my animals.”
Fellow volunteer Sophie is a member of the rehoming team, working weekends and holidays alongside her role as a teacher.
Sophie said: “I’m a massive cat lover with four of my own, three of who came from New Start. Cats can have an instant calming effect and can help to bring you back into the present, they are very therapeutic.
“One lady was talking to me about the cats she’s had throughout her life, bringing back those experiences and memories that she wanted to share. Creating a conversation based on the gorgeous animal in front of you is another way of forming a connection with other people.”
Wentworth Court Managing Director, Mitesh Dhanak added: “We are very grateful to New Start Cat Rescue visiting us today and putting smiles on our residents’ faces.
“We’ve gifted some cat food today as a thank you, and we hope to raise in excess of £100 in donations from cake sales in our café in August to support the charity.”

International Cat Day takes place on August 8 every year and is coordinated by the International Cat Care cat welfare charity. Their mission is to challenge cruelty, ignorance and misunderstanding and to affect positive change in the lives of cats.
