A picture snapped at Wentworth Court nursing home in Cheltenham of a resident’s joy at discovering a wonky runner bean has achieved runner-up position in a national competition.
Betty Price, a resident at the dementia-specialist home on Village Road was helping to harvest the vegetables along with activities coordinator, Suzanne Meadows when the moment was captured by freelance photographer and former Gloucestershire Media picture editor, Mikal Ludlow.
The picture was entered by the home into the Towergate Insurance Towergate in Bloom competition, which aims to encourage care homes to share pictures and stories about the therapeutic benefits of gardening.
Wentworth Court achieved runner-up position and was awarded a £50 prize that will go towards the residents’ garden.
Home manager, Gez Ossai said: “Our award-winning gardens have amazing benefits for our residents who live with dementia, providing a calm place to relax with family and friends.
“Residents help to look after the plants, which help to stimulate memories and can ease anxieties. Our raised beds have been designed at waist-height, so the residents can easily pick herbs and veggies that we use in the kitchen.
We’re really pleased to have won £50, which will go towards gardening equipment and plants which will be of real value to everyone who lives at Wentworth Court. Thank you to everyone who voted for us!”
