Cheltenham dementia nursing home given thumbs up by inspectors
Wentworth Court Nursing Home, Cheltenham’s first home dedicated to solely providing dementia care has received a vote of confidence from Quality Care Commission (CQC) for the second time, achieving a ‘good’ rating in all five categories.
The inspectors visited the home on Village Road unannounced on 14 – 15 August, and spent time observing daily life in the home and checking over care and nursing plans, audits and statutory paperwork.
They spoke with residents, their families and staff to seek out their opinions on the care offered by the home and came up with their findings in a glowing 22-page report.
The home met their criteria of being safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-managed.
The care team were praised for their commitment, with the report noting, “People were looked after by staff who were caring and compassionate and who were committed to improving people’s quality of life” and “it was clear that they were proud to be working at Wentworth Court.”
The report quoted a relative who said, “They’re so kind, so patient and they really care about [the people.] As we enter the door to visit, they always know about [our relative] and tell us how they have been, that is really reassuring.”
The inspectors observed staff taking time to help people with dementia understand day-to-day activities with “genuine warmth and interest.”
Home manger, Kate Stevens was also praised for providing “strong leadership.” Comments from residents’ families included in the report stated that “she’s truly amazing,” she’s onto things straight away” and “always there for you.”
Ms Stevens said: “This is a hugely positive report that recognises the dedication and hard work of our amazing team, which includes individuals who have won awards for dementia care, leadership and training.
“At the end of the day, it’s all about the residents and we are delighted that we are meeting the stringent standards set by CQC for quality of care.”
Wentworth Court opened in May 2015 and is home to more than 60 residents living with dementia, who receive highly-individualised care in an attractive, modern setting.
