Children from Hester’s Way Primary School treated residents at Wentworth Court Nursing Home to a performance of Christmas songs.
The newly-formed school choir gave their first public performance of festive favourites including Jingle Bells and Little Donkey at the Village Road nursing home, which provides specialist care for people living with dementia.
The choir is made up of children aged between six and 11.
Key Stage One teacher, Mrs Laura Mills said: “Myself and a colleague, Mrs Debbie Tilley set up the choir in September to encourage the enjoyment of singing and to promote confidence in our students. We have 16 children in our choir and they love to sing. The children also prepared some homemade sausage rolls for the residents with our head chef and mini mince pies, provided by Creed.
“We hope to build community links with Wentworth Court and we think the children gained a lot from the experience. The children are a very kind and empathetic bunch and they loved the idea that they will make the residents happy with their singing.
“We talked about how it might bring back some happy memories for the residents, reminding them of when they were children or when their children were younger. We feel the children can learn a lot from the older generation and hope the visit makes the residents and the children feel more connected with their community.”
Nellie, who lives at Wentworth Court said: “It’s lovely to see the children, really nice.”
Elizabeth, age 9 added: “It’s a real pleasure to be here.”
The reception class will also be making chocolate reindeers and Christmas cookies for the Wentworth Court residents.
