Residents at a Cheltenham nursing home celebrated the birth of one of Scotland’s most famous sons with an afternoon of Scottish-themed entertainment and food.
Wentworth Court on Village Road was decked with tartan and thistle decorations to set the scene for a special Burns Night celebration on Monday January 25, the anniversary of legendary poet, Robert Burns’ birth.
Dressed in kilts and Tam O’Shanter hats, the care team led the celebrations including Scottish dancing and sing-a-longs to favourite Scottish songs including the 70’s Wings hit, Mull of Kintyre and the traditional tune, My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.
After dancing and singing, residents enjoyed a Scottish-themed afternoon tea including smoked salmon mousse, haggis bites, Scotch eggs, oatie cakes and a blue-iced cake decorated with a white St Andrews cross.
Activities coordinator Suzanne Meadows said, “We’ve celebrated Burns Night with some beautiful Scottish food made by our chefs and an afternoon of Scottish activities, which helps to stimulate conversation and recall memories.
“We have some Scottish residents here or people with Scottish relatives and they have been talking about the colours of the different tartans and helping to choose ribbons and materials to make tartan brooches.
“Life continues for people who have dementia and we help to keep their minds active by looking forward to events throughout the calendar and engaging with meaningful activities.”
During lockdown, the Wentworth Court team has been helping loved ones to stay in touch by using digital technology including video calls and a closed Facebook group with snapshots of daily life in the home.
Staff and residents have received at least one Covid vaccination and onsite lateral flow testing that provides results within 30 minutes, to help keep everyone safe.
The dementia-specialist home is rated as ‘Outstanding’ for responsiveness and ‘Good’ in all other areas by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
