The Toyko 2020 Olympics may have been postponed, but it hasn’t stopped residents at a Cheltenham nursing home from getting into the spirit of the games.

More than 40 residents at Wentworth Court, a specialist dementia nursing home in Cheltenham spent a sunny afternoon this week enjoying their own version of the Olympics, including fun activities such as an egg and spoon race and a limbo competition.

Care team members opened the games with a dance display while residents watched and passed around the traditional Olympic torch, created with a painted flowerpot, cardboard and tissue paper.

Residents cheered on their carers taking part in a space hopper race, after a BBQ lunch followed by a visit from an ice cream van.

Activities coordinator Suzanne Meadows said, “The team have been working with residents for the past month to create props, displays, medals and of course our version of the iconic five rings symbol of the Olympic games.

“We are a very creative team who always come up with ideas to keep our residents happy and active with recent events including a Summer of Love festival and a beach party.

“It’s difficult when they have not had visits from family members for many months, but we have very vulnerable residents here and we have been able to stay Covid-19 free since April.”

Home manager, Gez Ossai added, “The residents have absolutely enjoyed it and it’s been great for their psychological and social wellbeing. An event like this, enjoying a sunny day in our lovely gardens brings some sort of normality, which is priceless.”

Wentworth Court has been in lockdown for six months with the care team using digital technology and social media to help families stay connected with their loved ones.
