Residents at a Cheltenham dementia nursing home have enjoyed the pleasures of a visit to the seaside while staying safe at home.
The team at Wentworth Court recreated a traditional beach experience at the home on Village Road, complete with a tasty fish and chip lunch wrapped in paper and a visit from an ice-cream van.
Care staff led a seaside-themed sing-a-long and staged a Punch and Judy show to entertain the troops on one of the hottest days of the year while residents were encouraged to build sandcastles on the beach and paddle in cooling pools.
Activities coordinator Suzanne Meadows said, “The whole team have come together to create this special seaside event, which we’ve been preparing for weeks, with the residents playing their part to help paint props and decorations.
“We have not been able to have family visitors or entertainers to the home for many months now, so it’s more important than ever that we engage our residents with activities that help them to recall happy memories and experiences.”
Wentworth Court has been in lockdown since March with activities including the Singing for Joy community dementia choir and Jo Jingles toddler music group postponed indefinitely to keep the vulnerable residents safe.
The team has been using digital technology, such as Skype to help families keep in touch with their loved ones and has developed a private Facebook group to enable families to see daily snapshots of their relatives.
Wentworth Court opened in May 2015 and exclusively provides dementia nursing care in Cheltenham. The home offers both long-term residential and nursing care for those who need daily assistance as well as shorter-term respite care.
The home is recognised as ‘Outstanding’ in the responsiveness category and ‘Good’ in all other areas by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
