Santa has made a very special visit to a Cheltenham nursing home, to bring joy to residents ahead of the big day on Friday.

Wentworth Court Nursing home manager, Gez Ossai donned the Father Christmas outfit as part of the festivities. Flanked by smiling elves, Suzanne Meadows and Michelle Fraser, the trio spent the morning singing favourite Christmas songs, while the residents, who live with moderate to severe dementia, joined in with the familiar tunes, shaking pom poms and sleigh bells.

“Thanks to the introduction of fast track lateral flow testing, it means that every resident will get the opportunity to be reunited with a family member before Christmas.”

“But while the team have been going the extra mile to keep spirits high, as we appreciate that this year won’t be like any other, to keep residents safe until the full roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccine in early 2021.” said Gez.

Plans afoot this week include a Christmas party, talent show and a Christingle carol service on Christmas eve.

Chief elf and activities coordinator Suzanne Meadows said, “Using Christmas songs in our morning music and movement session was lovely and uplifting for the residents and they also were thrilled to see Santa.

“Singing and moving to the music with pompoms and jingle bells helps to support our residents mental and physical wellbeing as well as having lots of fun.”

Wentworth Court has been Covid-free since April with the team using digital technology, such as Skype video-calling and a closed Facebook group to enable families to see daily snapshots of their relatives.

The home is now able to welcome up to 10 relatives at day, who are offered a fast-track Covid-test in the home’s car park on Village Road and receive results within 30 minutes.

A ground floor bedroom has been put aside as a visiting room which is accessed from the front garden, to ensure the safety of other residents and staff members.

Wentworth Court opened in May 2015 and exclusively provides dementia nursing care. The home is recognised as ‘Outstanding’ in the responsiveness category and ‘Good’ in all other areas by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
