Kind-hearted residents from Wentworth Court Nursing Home have donated produce from their own garden to a local foodbank

Residents at the dementia-specialist nursing home on Village Road have been growing onions, leeks, beetroot, rhubarb and apples for use in the home’s kitchen. But with an abundant harvest this year, they have decided to donate the surplus to support neighbours in nearby Springbank.

Wellbeing team leader, Ben Pargeter said: “We are blessed with beautiful gardens at Wentworth Court, with many raised beds for residents to help grow produce from seed.

“The residents are involved in the entire process, from visiting local garden centres to choose varieties to grow, to tending the seedlings and finally picking and pulling up the veggies.”

Residents visited the Springbank Community Centre in Springbank Way to deliver the fruit and vegetables to volunteers working at the centre, along with tinned and packet foods kindly donated by their families.

The visit has been part of a fortnight of harvest-themed activities which has included making traditional corn dolls and decorated bookmarks and joining in a traditional harvest festival thanksgiving service.
